Laser therapy helps treat mesothelioma
One of the newest treatments for reducing pain and inflammation in patients with conditions such as mesothelioma is cold laser therapy. This treatment, also known as low-level laser therapy, uses medical lasers instead of needles in a manner that is similar to acupuncture. Various types of lasers are becoming increasingly prevalent in the medical arena, increasing the treatment options available to doctors and patients.

Cervicogenic Headaches can be successfully treated with laser therapy

Cervicogenic headaches result from biomechanical issues generally in the subcranial region of the neck (base of the skull) as it articulates with the upper cervical spine. When experiencing this headache, most people grab an aspirin or some other over-the-counter remedy, which may or may not provide temporary help. Addressing the underlying condition though involves joint manipulation, stretching, therapeutic exercise and activities to correct posture. Joint restriction can disturb sensitive structures of the neck. For example, a nerve constriction can cause a headache to radiate throughout the entire craniofacial region.
There are many well understood causes for these headaches--grinding and clenching teeth, bad posture, stress, TMJ/TMDs...
Low level laser therapy provides a non-pharmacological tool to facilitate the physical therapy involved in improving the conditions that ultimately alleviate these headaches. Our upcoming webinar discusses how many cases of CGH are also associated with an upper crossed muscle imbalance syndrome. An accurate diagnosis of CGH will help clinicians provide an appropriate intervention.
Host Phil Page is a licensed physical therapist, athletic trainer, and certified strength & conditioning specialist. He graduated from LSU in physical therapy and received his master's degree in exercise physiology from Mississippi State University, as well as a doctorate in Kinesiology from LSU. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. He has been involved in rehabilitation and sports medicine for over 20 years. Since 1998, Phil has been the director of clinical education and research for Thera-Band & Biofreeze products. His duties include directing the international educational programs and managing product research around the world. Phil is an Instructor in the Kinesiology Department at LSU, as well as Clinical Instructor of Orthopedics at Tulane University medical School.

 Laser Therapy Helping Traumatic Brain Injury
Low Level Light Therapy may aid Traumatic Brain Injury writes Michael Hamblin et al...
Low Level Laser therapy's applications have broadened to include serious diseases such as heart attack, stroke and spinal cord injury. Low Level Laser therapy may have beneficial effects in the acute treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury by increasing mitochondrial respiration, activating transcription factors, reducing key inflammatory mediators, inhibiting apoptosis (programmed cell death), stimulating angiogenesis, and increasing neurogenesis.
Michael Hamblin et al studied the effect of an 810nm laser on several cellular processes in primary cortical neurons cultured from mouse embryonic brains. They found that at low fluences (0.3-3Jcm2) mitochondrial respiration was stimulated by the increase in adenosine triphosphate (ATP), Ca2+, and mitochondrial membrane potential. This, in turn, generated low amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) that activated signaling pathways and gene transcription without causing cytotoxicity. At 10J/cm2, the stimulation of these parameters was reduced because instead of activating mitochondrial respiration, they damaged enzymes. At 30jcm2, severe mitochondrial damage occurred, leading to a second large release of ROS and NO and presumably apoptosis and cytotoxicity (although this study did not make these measurements).

Multi Radiance Medical donates TQ Solo to help those without medical insurance
Multi Radiance Medical is donating a TQ Solo portable laser therapy device to the Volunteers in Medicine free clinic in San Diego working with Dr. Ken Greenberg, a twice weekly volunteer at VIM in San Diego. The laser will help working patients at the clinic who cannot afford health insurance.
Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) was started by Dr. Jack McConnell who is credited with the discovery of Tylenol and created the first commercially successful MRI scanner and was one of the co-principal investigators for the Human Genome Project.
VIM arranges high-quality medical care from retired physicians who volunteer their talents for local citizens without medical insurance. VIM has more than 55 operating clinics in the east and one each in Oregon and Washington. The San Diego clinic is the first in California.
