Ungar shared this case study:
A
14 year old male had bilateral TMJ pain for over
one year. He had been seeing
dentist and was fitted for a splint. The splint
gave marginal relief at best.
The
patient then had arthroscopic surgery six months
ago. Afterwards, his TMJ locked
up and he was unable to open his
mouth. The surgery was followed
by 6 months of physical therapy which included jaw
stretches, ultrasound, heat, EMS and TENS with
very little relief. The patient
was a 7.0/ 10.0 daily and missed two weeks of
school. When the pain worsened,
it caused severe headaches into the temporal
region right side greater then left
side.
The
exam revealed limited ability to open mouth
approximately 2 fingers width.
Crepitus into TMJ bilaterally with the
right side greater than the left, muscle spasms
lateral medial pterygoid, temporalis and
master muscles.
The
treatment plan included 5-250hz Cervical Lymphs
for two minutes bilaterally. This was followed by
1000-3000hz TMJ, master, pterygoid, joint capsules
and temporals two minutes each for three
visits.
After
the third visit VAS 0.0/ 10.0.
The third visit through tenth visit
treatments were done using 5-250hz to TMJ, master
and pterygoid bilaterally. The
patient was released after 10 visits.
Pain free 3 weeks 0.0 out of
10.0 No relapse to
date.
